VOIP and XMPP jabber client Yate

Subject:

I tried install ekiga on ubuntu.  it was a big fail, no outbound calls were able to be made.  could be an issue with iptables or selinux.  either way, terminal and apt-get remove ekiga for me.gaggled around and found Yate, it supports voip and xmpp (jabber) for chat.

  • tried insatlling yate from the software center
    • said it was installed but cannot find it when trying to search for the app.  fml
  • apt-get remove and then installed again
    • same problem
  • reference: http://askubuntu.com/questions/174441/how-to-install-and-configure-yate-server
    • open terminal ctrl+alt+t
    • type 'yate -vvvv' and it booted
    • but it disapears when you shut it down so when you see it in the list on the left menu, right click and lock to launcher

yate doesn't have much support for video conferencing.
Zoiper seems to be the best bet, but I don't like its interface and the way it shows chat.

pidgin is my favorite

however for doing VOIP I think zoiper is the best bet

  • installation is tricky as you need root access but there are good instructions on the page
  • in the terminal, which is bash (like DOS for windows) you need to start with sudo when trying to install, update or do a system altering command
